Paul the Insurer 26: Broker as 360° advisor - More than just an intermediary.

Brokers were once ridiculed and underestimated as the “wine and dine group”. Today, they are central architects of risk management with a portfolio that goes far beyond traditional insurance brokerage. Paul the Insurer shows why brokers today are empaths, strategists and bridge builders between risks, health, wealth and talent and why young talents find a future with meaning and diversity here.

Just a few decades ago, brokers were seen as aggressive competition for insurance agents, and reinsurers saw them primarily as networking professionals. Today, their profile has changed fundamentally. International brokerage houses are positioning themselves as central navigation points for companies when it comes to risks, provision and securing the future.

Their core task remains risk management, i.e. advising on risk financing and insurance instruments. But their role no longer ends there.

Health, wealth and talent solutions: The expanded playing field

Brokers have consistently expanded their range of services:

Health solutions: Supporting companies to improve the health, well-being and productivity of their employees while controlling costs.

Wealth solutions: Advice on optimizing investment results and financial stability, both institutionally and individually.

Talent solutions: Developing HR and talent strategies that make organizations resilient and fit for the future.

Brokers have long since become interdisciplinary consultants whose impact extends far beyond the insurance market.

Insurance consulting as a profession with depth

Paul the Insurer describes the industry as fascinatingly diverse, ideal for young people looking for a career that combines economic, social and human responsibility. Those who work in insurance consulting combine disciplines such as: Mathematics, Psychology, Economics, Medicine, Finance or Geology.

This diversity not only opens up intellectual breadth, but also professional meaningfulness.

Why empathy is becoming a success factor

Technical expertise is important, but not enough. Brokers and advisors are only successful if they understand people: their concerns, goals, priorities and risk awareness.

Empathy is not a “soft skill”, but the foundation of every consultation. It creates trust and thus also the basis for effective risk and pension strategies.

Insurance consulting shapes the future

Insurance has long been more than just selling policies. It is the ability to make risks visible, build resilience and enable companies and people to shape the future.

Traditions still characterize risk management today, but the Risk!n Conference 2025 impressively demonstrated why change is long overdue. Inspiring food for thought and a clear call to action: Dare to do something new!

The insurance industry is characterized by decades of practice and constant change. In the <g id="gid_0">Paul the Insurer</g> podcast, Paul describes how risk management can outgrow its image as a dry specialist discipline: with stories that arouse curiosity and open up opportunities. Not only experienced risk managers are addressed here: Everyone is invited to question familiar ways of doing things.

Five mistakes that we can no longer ignore

A highlight at this year’s Risk-!n conference was the pointed dialog between the risk manager of a large Swiss hospital group and a professor from the University of Lucerne. With clear words and a twinkle in their eyes, they presented the five biggest mistakes that are slowing down risk management today:

Risks are assessed as foreseeable

Qualitative analyses are confused with supposed objectivity

It is assumed that people behave rationally

Risk analyses are considered “technology-free”

Risk management and decision-making are separated from each other

Tried and tested – but still risky?

The experts criticized the fact that methods often only survive because of their feel-good factor and ease of sale, rarely because of their actual effectiveness. There is often a gap between scientific findings and everyday business life that stretches back decades. Consultants offer tools that do not leave the client’s comfort zone, but that is precisely where further development begins.

Call to action

The conclusion of the conference is uncompromising: the future of risk management requires courage to let go of old habits and make consistent use of scientific findings. Those who cling to existing structures not only miss out on opportunities, but also jeopardize the innovative strength of their own company. The younger generation in particular is seen as the driving force behind this change and is prepared to take on responsibility.

Insurance companies shape the future

Insurance is more than just a profession, it has the power to change the world and make the future a safer place. Let’s leave the comfort zone behind and take risk management to the next level.

One man, one vision and ten years of persuasion: how a “missionary” is redefining risk management and why his message is changing the world of insurance and business.

He compares himself not to a religious zealot, but to a missionary: patient, strategic and passionate. What began as an idea led to the founding of an association of over 3,000 risk managers in 23 countries in the Asia-Pacific region. Today, he is Chairman of the International Federation of Risk and Insurance Management Associations (IFRIMA) and has a provocative motto: Make Risk Management Great Again.

Why this motto works

Was risk management ever “great”? Perhaps not. But the slogan is an invitation to rethink the role of the risk manager. Away from the administrator and towards the designer. Away from being a cost factor and towards being a strategic partner. It draws attention to a topic that is becoming increasingly relevant in view of geopolitical, technological and climatic risks.

Risk managers as strategic drivers

The message is clear: risk managers are more than just insurance coordinators. They are enablers, forward thinkers and early warnings. They recognize threats and opportunities long before they are reflected in figures. They translate risks into strategic decisions and give them a voice in top management.

From silent observer to voice on the Board of Directors

Instead of just placing policies, as was often the case in the past, risk managers today take responsibility for future security. They combine risk, innovation and resilience. Their task is not only to minimize risks, but also to point out new paths and actively shape change.

The next ten years: spreading the teaching

The missionary does not preach in the desert. He speaks to people who are willing to listen and want to change. The job description will continue to develop over the next few years. It is not about dogma, but about trust, knowledge and influence.

Risk management is no longer a secondary function. It is a strategic core area of modern corporate management and those who shape it are the missionaries of a new era, according to Paul the Insurer.

Thousands of contracts, incomprehensible clauses, language and legal barriers show that the world of insurance often resembles an impenetrable jungle. But artificial intelligence promises a clear path through it. But what does this mean for companies, lawyers and the future?

Insurance companies and businesses work with countless documents, in a thicket of paragraphs, languages and hidden risks. Like in a dark jungle, dangers loom, such as overlooked clauses or legal pitfalls. No wonder many people get lost in it, says Paul the Insurer in today’s podcast.

The tech shaman and the eucalyptus plantation

At the Risk -!n 2025 conference, a technology expert – known tongue-in-cheek as a shaman – presented a solution that transforms the jungle: his tools use mathematical models, data analysis and artificial intelligence to create an orderly landscape. Contracts from different countries and jurisdictions are automatically read, translated, structured and made analyzable in a data pool.

Fishing in the data lake – with AI

Another application specifically fishes out contracts, policies and important documents from this “data cloud”. It analyzes the structure, content and clauses and detects errors, gaps or risks before they become expensive. What used to take days or weeks now takes minutes.

When AI puts lawyers out of a job

One customer reported satisfaction with the solution and is also concerned: “The technology solves problems, but creates new ones. This is because lawyers are losing tasks that were previously considered irreplaceable. But instead of job losses, transformation is taking place: in-house lawyers are beginning to use AI themselves and redefine their role by moving away from being document hunters to strategic advisors.

The jungle remains – but we find the way

Artificial intelligence is radically changing the world of insurance. It is cleaning up, automating and opening up new perspectives. Even where uncertainty initially prevails. Those who embark on this journey will not only find their way out of the jungle, but also new opportunities to shape it.

Paul the Insurer 22: Blackmail on the net - The dirty game of cyber criminals

A seemingly harmless incident turns out to be a professionally organized cyberattack. A look behind the scenes shows how complex cyber risks have become and why modern cyber insurance must do far more than just pay for damage.

The day begins with news of a large-scale raid against mafia structures in northern Thailand. The authorities discover a network of hacking businesses where employees work, or rather have to work, under precarious conditions. Anyone who fails to meet their daily “hacking quota” is punished. As soon as a site is closed, the business moves across the border to Cambodia, Laos or Myanmar.

This insight shows the industrial dimension of modern cybercrime. Behind every attack there are often well-organized, globally networked structures, far removed from the image of the individual hacker in the dark basement.

From newspaper report to the reality of a company

Only minutes later, the next message follows, but this time of a personal nature: a company, a professional and technologically advanced customer, has been the victim of an attack. Hackers had stolen employee access data and uploaded data to the darknet. The response: The data would only be deleted against payment of a high ransom.

How could this happen? The attacker came via the simplest but often most effective route: human error. A strong system remains vulnerable if individual access points are not adequately protected.

Luckily, the company’s emergency team reacted immediately. Only minutes later, the damage was under control, and an analysis revealed that the captured data was outdated and hardly usable. Nevertheless, further measures were taken to prevent future attacks.

Cyber insurance: more than just a policy

The case shows how demanding cyber insurance is today. It is no longer just a question of cover amounts and claims payments. Insurers have to maintain a network of specialized service providers:

– IT forensic experts who analyse attacks
– Recovery teams who back up and repair systems
– Legal experts who clarify data protection and liability issues
– Prevention specialists who minimize future risks

Cyber insurance is teamwork at the highest level and a professional field that is becoming increasingly attractive for young talent.

Cyber risks are a never-ending story

The episode of Paul the Insurer illustrates how closely real crime, digital attacks and insurance benefits are intertwined.
Insurance not only protects against risks, it can also solve social problems. A look at why these services often remain invisible and repeatedly come up against barriers to acceptance.

Insurers are often criticized for being too bureaucratic and not empathetic enough, according to Paul the Insurer. Yet their services go far beyond traditional claims settlement. The industry is trying to close gaps with foundations, special products and social initiatives, even if not everything is always successful.

Solidarity in a field of tension

Many people simply cannot afford insurance. Although family or the state sometimes help in an emergency, gaps in cover remain. Innovative cover concepts and fundraising campaigns in the industry address precisely this issue, but insurers are ultimately committed to commercial success.

Politics and insurers: misunderstandings are inevitable

Special catastrophe cover only takes effect from a predefined threshold. If, for example, the wind speed remains below the trigger, the insurance does not pay out, despite high premiums. This regularly leads to misunderstandings between politicians and the industry.

More comprehensibility, more potential

The insurance industry offers attractive opportunities and scope for shaping society. However, this requires mediation, education and young talents who are curious and open to new paths.

Insurance is more than just a product: those who understand the mechanisms recognize the social potential. Openness, creativity and professional development are the keys to shaping the future together.

Paul the Insurer 20: Antigone and the power of the insurance industry.

What does a heroine of Greek tragedy have to do with modern insurance? More than many people think, and the answer inspires a new look at responsibility, change and leadership.

The world of insurance is far removed from clichés and mountains of files. It is a dynamic field full of opportunities, risks and human decisions. This is precisely its appeal: insurance reflects the big issues of our time, from current environmental debates to character-based principles that are timeless.

Literature for managers: Antigone’s lesson for the industry

In a winter characterized by a love of learning and philosophical moments on an executive course at MIT, an insurance professional encounters the ancient figure Antigone. Her dilemma lies in the conflict between conscience and state authority and shows how topical classical literature can be. After all, modern managers face similar conflicts: Should you follow existing rules or follow your own convictions when change is imminent?

Green waves, leadership and new responsibilities

The dilemma that Antigone is experiencing can be found today in the form of the green movement and the associated challenges for insurance companies. When major investors made climate issues a priority, insurers also had to take a stand. Suddenly there were questions like: Can we continue to insure coal-fired power plants or is it time to rethink, even at the risk of economic disruption?

The way out of the dilemma arose from a further development of the perspective: Away from radical disruption, towards evolutionary change. The economic ecosystem needs sustainable transformation, but with responsibility and prudence. Insurers and investment companies have a great responsibility to help shape social developments without prematurely destabilizing valuable structures.

Stories that shape our work

The combination of ancient tragedy and modern economic dilemmas makes it clear that insurance is about far more than just numbers. It is about values, leadership and the ability to constructively accompany change as an economic participant. Those who embrace this perspective will recognize in every conflict an opportunity to actively shape the future.

Insurance companies shape the future

Insurance is more than just an industry, it embodies the opportunity to steer developments responsibly and creatively. We remain curious about the next chapters and invite you to join us in discovering inspiring stories and new solutions for the challenges of the present and the future.

What needs to happen for auditors to change their perspective? The latest podcast shows how innovative approaches and AI are revolutionizing the work of auditors and what everyone can learn from this.

In the insurance industry, auditors are far more than just number crunchers. They act like Sherlock Holmes, tracking down errors that could cause financial damage to the company or jeopardize its reputation. From accountants to IT specialists and actuaries: they all share an enthusiasm for the meticulous search for weaknesses. Patience, precise knowledge of processes and accounting and a basic understanding of insurance are essential.

Versatile challenges away from the cliché

Auditors report directly to the Management Board. Their reports uncover problems that affect operations and require quick, well-founded decisions. Despite its often dry reputation, this job not only offers a broad perspective on the industry, but also exciting challenges and opportunities for further development.

Creativity and AI as game changers

Traditional audit methods are now reaching their limits. A new approach is encouraging auditors to think strategically and incorporate innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) into their work. This not only opens up more efficient audit procedures, but also new opportunities to reduce the human error rate. This means that auditors are no longer just rule makers, but also drivers of innovation, and this change in perspective is inspiring.

Insurance companies shape the future

The role of the auditor is changing. Those who are open to new ways of thinking will discover a real opportunity to actively shape the future of the insurance industry in this professional field. Insurance is more than just a job: it is a playing field where creativity, strategy and responsibility are required.

In the heart of Valencia’s orange groves lies a story as old as time — blending ancient tradition with modern risk management. This episode reveals how an orange grower chooses insurance over speculation to protect his harvest and secure peace of mind.

Our journey begins near Valencia, where ancient customs like the Tribunal de las Aguas still mediate farmer disputes, preserving harmony without lengthy court battles. This tradition reflects the timeless balance between risk, security, and cooperation—core principles also central to insurance today.

The Dilemma: Speculate or Insure?

On a sunny October day, a conversation unfolds between two insurers amid flourishing orange trees. The choice is stark: sell the crop early and accept a lower but certain price or wait for the harvest, risking frost or plague but hoping for more profit. The answer? Pay the premium and insure the grove. Peace of mind outweighs uncertain gain.

Why Insurance Is More Than Protection

For an owner living miles away in Madrid, daily worries about frost, pests, or theft are real. Insurance transfers these risks to trusted experts, allowing owners to focus on growth rather than fear. The story captures a universal truth in insurance: the value of security over risky speculation.

An Invitation to Explore

Whether you’re considering investing in orange groves or curious about a career in insurance, this story invites you to discover the full world of risks and protections shaping global commerce and daily lives. Visit Paul the Insurer‘s podcast and website for insights beyond the myths.

Insurance is not just a career—it’s a way to shape the future, offering stability amid uncertainty. Just like an orange grove owner, sometimes the smartest choice is to buy peace of mind.

Quantum computing is seen as the next big technology revolution. For the insurance industry, however, it will initially have a huge impact on risk models, pricing, simulations and compliance. work in secret.

Quantum computing is a hype topic. But while spectacular headlines report on breakthroughs in research and cryptography, the actual change in the insurance industry will take place rather quietly. Behind the scenes, deep in data centers, where computing power reaches its limits today.

Digital assistants such as “Pavel” are already analyzing the potential impact on the insurance business and the prospects are far-reaching.

New dimensions in risk management

Reinsurance portfolios consist of countless variables: Regions, contract structures, cover limits, terms. Finding the optimal combination of these is like looking for the famous needle in a haystack.

Quantum computing massively accelerates this optimization. Billions of possible variants can be analyzed simultaneously. The result: more efficient portfolios, better calculated risks, more stable markets.

Faster disaster simulations

Whether hurricanes, earthquakes or forest fires, insurers regularly simulate scenarios with thousands of runs. Particularly rare, extreme events are difficult to model today.

Quantum-based Monte Carlo simulations should drastically speed up these calculations. This not only improves pricing, but also resilience to climate risks.

A sharper look at fraud

Fraud detection is an eternal race against complex networks of claims, data points and connections. Quantum-based graph analysis and machine learning can detect hidden patterns faster than traditional systems.

The potential: billions in losses per year could be reduced.

Individual pricing in real time

Hyper-personalized tariffs are seen as a model for the future of the industry. However, calculating them is extremely mathematically demanding. Quantum computing enables real-time optimization across millions of parameters, from driving behavior and health data to life stage.

This makes insurance even more tailor-made.

Better forecasts for reserves and claims

Classical models reach their limits when it comes to uncertain or rare risks in particular. Quantum computing can deliver more precise predictions using probabilistic methods – for example in refined Bayesian networks. This strengthens reserve management and risk prevention.

Climate risks: the long view ahead

Long-term climate and environmental models are among the most complex simulations of all. Quantum technology can help to better understand environmental interactions and assess portfolio risks more robustly.

This is becoming essential for insurers, both in regulatory and economic terms.

Serve regulators faster

Solvency and capital models are based on stochastic equations that require enormous computing power. Quantum algorithms promise considerable speed advantages here.

This makes it easier for supervisory authorities to verify and audit the system and increases its overall security.

The future calculates differently

Quantum computing will not turn the insurance industry upside down overnight. But the impact will be fundamental: more efficient processes, more precise models, better risk assessment. The change starts at the back end and ends with tangible benefits for customers.

If you want to understand this development, you don’t have to study physics. A look behind the scenes and perhaps a conversation with digital assistants like “Pavel” is enough.

Creativity is generally regarded as the domain of art. But what happens when you broaden your view? An encounter at the Zurich Kunsthaus shows: The insurance industry also thrives on ingenious ideas and sometimes even genuine revolutions.

Recently at the Zurich Kunsthaus: visitors lose themselves in the colorful worlds of the Impressionists. Monet, Seurat, Gauguin and Van Gogh cast a spell over the audience. In front of one of these works, a discussion breaks out between two friends that goes surprisingly far beyond the canvas.

The controversial question: Is creativity an innate talent reserved for composers, painters and poets? Or does it also arise from experience, intuition and deep reflection? Perhaps even from the workings of the unconscious?

Creativity – more than genius and inspiration

While some romanticize the “creative genius”, a broader concept of creativity opens up the scene: chess moves, the invention of the wheel or the telegraph are also significant creative achievements. So why not innovations in the world of insurance?

After all, ingenuity has always been in demand there too. The reinsurance business has developed continuously since the 1850s. New ways of transferring risk were devised, but they mostly followed familiar principles. Evolution, not revolution.

A creative break: insurance-linked securities

Then came 1996, when an American reinsurer came up with a radical new idea: insurance risks were to be linked to the financial market via insurance-linked securities (ILS). In one fell swoop, risks became tradable, detached from traditional insurance structures.

For some, this was sober financial engineering. For others, it was a creative stroke of genius.

The comparison with art is obvious: While Impressionism, Expressionism and Abstraction continued the evolutionary path of painting, installations were a break with everything familiar. A new medium. A new language.

ILS was just as radical for the insurance world.

Creativity has many faces

For Paul the Insurer, creativity is not only measured in symphonies or paintings. It can also be found in mathematical formulas, legal tricks, engineering solutions and innovative risk transfer models.

Today, the insurance industry is more open than ever to such approaches. It is looking for creative minds who want to think in new ways, reconceptualize risks and shape the future.

Art is in the eye of the beholder

Those who only look for art in museums overlook the poetry of modern solutions. Creativity arises wherever people question the old and dare to try something new. Whether on canvas or in policies: the decisive factor is thinking “beyond the frame”.

For all those who share this curiosity, it is worth taking a look behind the scenes of the insurance world. Because it is far more than just an industry: it is a creative space of opportunity.
